Calne Foundation Trust Enrichment Scholarship Talk

Our Year 5 and 6 pupils enjoyed an inspiring visit from St Mary’s Calne alumnae – Elan and Grace (2022 Leavers), who shared highlights from their charitable efforts and exciting adventures in Kenya.

The trip was possible due to funding received from the Calne Foundation Trust (CFT) Enrichment Scholarship, a discretionary award available to Sixth Form girls who complete a rigorous and competitive interview process. Examples of successful applications in recent years include Gap Year projects which will bring benefit to others and are academically enriching to the recipient.

Furthermore, the CFT Enrichment Scholars are keen to return to the school community and share their story – helping foster a culture of giving and philanthropy within our pupils.

St Margaret’s pupils enjoyed an entertaining presentation, punctuated with vibrant photos and videos illustrating Elan and Graces’ time volunteering at ‘Bluebells’ school, in Watamu, Kenya. With 160 pupils – a similar size to St Margaret’s Prep – our pupils were intrigued by the similarities and differences.

The Year 5 & 6 pupils were captivated by their three-week adventure, that included maps and different modes of transport, responding to challenges (such as school closures due to political rallies) and developing engaging teaching methods – often involving singing and dancing – which, again, our pupils could relate to!

Finally, the pupils also enjoyed learning how the gift of giving is not always about fundraising, but indeed, the gift of time. The presentation illustrated the additional benefits of stepping out into the world; including a chance to volunteer at the local turtle sanctuary, visiting the Watamu snake farm, reef snorkelling, exploring ancient ruins (Gede Ruins) and meeting monkeys and wild elephants in the Sekoke Forest. Most importantly, it was clear Elan and Grace had enjoyed forging unique connections and new friendships with their local hosts - who welcomed them warmly into their home, families and the local community.

Mr Bromwich thanked Elan and Grace for sharing their time and an inspiring talk – inviting the children to consider how we can all contribute to the world and make a difference as global citizens.
