Watch out, Year 4 Vikings about!

On Friday 9th February, Year 4 enjoyed a jam-packed day to kick off their new unit of learning all about the Vikings!

They came to school looking the part, some as vicious Vikings and others as more peaceful settlers! They began their day learning a Viking-style song whilst rowing their gigantic ‘longboat’.

Next, they learnt all about the Viking festival ‘Up Helly Aa’ which takes place annually on the Shetland Islands. Inspired by this, they made their own torches and went on a Viking procession through the school grounds!

The children then learnt all about how Vikings travelled across the seas to invade on their longboats. They learnt the names for each part of the longboat and considered why it was such an effective mode of transport. From this, in pairs, they started constructing their own model versions!

Finally, no Viking day would be complete without a Viking feast! The children indulged in a number of foods that would have been enjoyed in Viking times.

What a wonderful day to start a new unit of learning!
