First Lego League 2024

Matilda (Year 6) shares her reflections on the First Lego League 2024 - a challenging but fun experience for the Year 6 team of eleven.  This year the theme was ‘Masterpiece’ " to ‘imagine and innovate new ways to create and communicate art across the globe’.

The work was divided into two main parts – a problem solving project and computer programming.  Over several months, each member of the team wrote programme code for our Lego robot, to enable it to complete a number of ‘live’ missions at the tournament.

We split the missions between the team, sharing our learnings as our problem solving, coding skills and experience developed.  The missions included:

  • Immersive reality experience
  • Light show
  • Theatre challenge
  • Museum challenge (which also involved building a cake made of Lego)!

On 24th January 2024, the St Margaret’s Prep First Lego League Team travelled to the tournament in Bristol.   Firstly, we all presented our project ‘Baking Mastery’ to the judge panel.  Next, four members volunteered to be the ‘Game Table Team’ – responsible for running the Lego robot programmes in a ‘live’ environment and rewriting code in ‘real-time’ when required.

It was a nerve-racking and exhilarating experience – and we learned that team support is vital when working under pressure!

The Judges were pleased with our overall team performance, sharing lots of positive feedback.  We all were proud to receive our First Lego League medals.
